Heritage Row Building Destroyed in Fire
KUALA LUMPUR January 21, 2015: An old colonial building which has been turned into a nightclub was destroyed in a fire along Jalan Doraisamy here. In the 3.45pm incident yesterday, large columns of smoke were seen coming out of the building, part of the row of colonial buildings here commonly known as Heritage Row. By the time the firefighters arrived at the scene the flames had engulfed most of the building, said Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail. A total of 51 firemen from three nearby fire stations managed to control the fire and stop it from spreading by 4.23pm. A massive fire has destroyed an ancient Tibetan village known as Shangri-La. Chinese authorties renamed the community years ago to attract tourists. And they had succeeded. But now the village, which is also known as Dukezong, is mostly gone, consumed by a blaze over the weekend that lasted 10 hours and destroyed nearly 250 houses. David Fundingsland, who's in charge of educational travels for the tour group Wild China , says the 1,300-year-old Tibetan village in China's southwestern province of Yunnan used to be a stop on the ancient southern Silk Road. "This was a caravan route where tea from the south part of Yunnan Province, southern China, was sent by horse caravan into Tibet," he says. "And in exchange for the tea, the Tibetans would give war horses and other valuable goods that they were getting from India and beyond." FIRE SAFETY AND PROTECTION MEASURES IN HERITAGE BUILDINGS WITH SPECIAL CONSIDERATION ON MUSUEM BUILDINGS IN MALAYSIA
An academic research on Fire Safety and Protection Measures in Heritage Buildings with Special Consideration on Museum Buildings in Malaysia was conducted by Nurul Hamiruddin Salleh from 2007 until 2011 for his PhD. thesis in Building Conservation at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. The methodologies selected in the study are divided into three main methods. The first method involves literature review, where both heritage buildings and fire safety literatures were reviewed in order to identify key issues and recent research that relate or has significance to the research topic. The second method involves the collection of primary data through onsite observations, interviews and questionnaires into 37 heritage buildings that used as museums in 9 states throughout Malaysia.
